Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy is a technique used to obtain an infrared spectrum of absorption or emission of a solid, liquid or gas. An FTIR spectrometer simultaneously collects high-spectral-resolution data over a wide spectral range. This confers a significant advantage over a dispersive spectrometer, which measures intensity over a narrow range of wavelengths at a time.

Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) is a sampling method that introduces light onto a sample in order to acquire structural and compositional information. ATR is one of the most used sampling technologies for FTIR Spectroscopy. The reason for the ubiquitous use of ATR is that it enables solids and liquid samples to be analyzed neat – simplifying the measurement of virtually all substances.• In contrast with transmission (the other widely used sampling method), the measurement path length is independent of the thickness of the sample. ATR is an internal reflection-based method, and the sample path length is dependent on the depth of penetration of the infrared energy into the sample. A solid sample can be 100 microns thick or 100 mm thick and the recorded infrared spectrum will basically look the same. If a fluid or slurry sample is in contact with the ATR surface, the infrared spectrum of the liquid portion is recorded. It is this latter phenomena that makes Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) so powerful for chemical reaction monitoring. ATR can measure spectra without the need for any sample preparations or dilution, ATR has found applicability in analyzing solid and liquid materials. One of the earliest uses of ATR was to obtain the infrared spectra of polymers samples and films.

How does FTIR work and why use it?

The FTIR uses interferometry to record information about a material placed in the IR beam. The Fourier Transform results in spectra that analysts can use to identify or quantify the material.

Sample requirement for FTIR What types of samples can you analyze? 
Excellent quality spectra can be obtained for many types of samples using transmission.
  1. Organic powders in pellet or mull form 
  2. Thermoplastic powders 
  3. Soluble polymers
  4. Thin polymer films 
  5. Regular-shaped polymers (with preparation)
  6. Irregular-shaped polymers (with preparation)
  7. Dark polymer films (not carbon-filled)
  8. Liquids (free-flowing or viscous)

Pellet for FTIR samples

  1. 5 mg dried and finely grounded samples are required for analysis.
  2. Only powdered and viscous liquid samples (compatible with KBr) will be entertained.
  3. The scanning range will be 400-4000 cm-1

Get CRF Registration for 
External users 

1. Registration process (One Time): New Registration for external users.User Verification: Upload photo of Front side and back side of valid Identity card issued by the organization (only .jpeg format, file Size less than 1 Mb, height less than 1000 pixels, width less than 800 pixels). Undertaking: Download the undertaking template ( Download Link ). Duly filled, signed and stamped form should be uploaded in .pdf format. Confirmation: An email will be sent to the user after verification of the documents.

2.Before planning to avail the Instrument facility of CRF IIT Delhi: user must visit https://crf.iitd.ac.in -> Facility -> select the desired facility from left side navigation list.  Read carefully all the relevant information such as required sample type, testing charges and instrument location. Be prepared with details of the samples.

3.Log in and Click on Booking Appointment Tab: All the information relevant to testing must be filled in instrument booking form. In case user does not provide the required information the booking is liable to be rejected. User can upload the relevant existing data of their samples that might help in the measurements.

4.Sample submission & Payment Process: Once the application is submitted, the in-charge will verify the details and approve the request.External users must wait for the approval before making the payment and submitting the samples to concerned lab. After approval the payment should be made by the user. The payment transaction details need to be submitted online before appointment date time.
