MPMS3 SQUID Magnetometer (CRF Shared Facility IIT Delhi)

The MPMS-3 SQUID magnetometer is the latest model and one of the most sensitive instruments to measure the bulk magnetization of the sample. This equipment offers several major advantages compared to the older models (even the existing SQUID magnetometer) with fast data acquisition, temperature control, and magnetic field sweep. It is a completely cryogen-free closed-cycle system capable of performing magnetic measurements such as magnetic field, temperature-dependent dc magnetization measurements, and AC susceptibility (including frequency dependence). All the sample types, including bulk, thin-film, single crystal, nanoparticle-based organic and inorganic samples, etc., can be measured with the system.

Instrument Company & Country: Quantum Design, USA
The equipment offers various measurement modes like
  1. DC Scan Mode : DC mode sensitivity for high fields (≥2.5 kOe) is ≤ 6 x 10-7 emu, high resolution MH Loop measurement over ±7 T range, with ≥ 500 data points can be acquired within 4 hours.
  2. VSM Mode : Sensitivity for ≤ 2,500 Oe is ≤ 1 x 10-8 emu and sensitivity at higher fields (≥2.5 kOe) is ≤ 8 x 10-8 emu with maximum measurable moment of ≥ 100 emu.
  3. AC Susceptibility Mode : AC amplitude ranges from 0.1 Oe to 10 Oe with frequency ranging from 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz.
Few important features are:
  • The user can easily perform all the measurements (DC, VSM, and AC susceptibility) spanning the entire 1.8–350 K temperature range using a single software measurement sequence without breaking the sample environment.
  • 300 K to 10 K stable can be reached very fast in ≥ 15 min.
  • Maximum magnetic field is ± 7 T with max sweep rate of 700 Oe/sec
