PHYSICAL PROPERTY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM (PPMS) CRF Owned Facility  Sonipat Campus

PPMS installed in CRF Sonipat campus is Cryogen Free Measurement System (CFMS) from Cryogenic Limited, UK. CFMS system combines the latest cryogen-free technology with sophisticated measurement techniques; providing a versatile, powerful investigative device achieving low temperatures and high magnetic fields without the use of liquid Helium or nitrogen. CFMS system has a Variable Temperature Insert (VTI) surrounding the sample chamber which allows to vary the sample temperature. The VTI is supported in the bore of the magnet. There is a Helium dump vessel, which contains Helium gas at room temperature in it. This Helium gas is circulated in VTI by an oil free pump called as scroll pump or VTI pump. Helium gas from dump vessel goes to cryostat from Helium inlet point present on the cryostat. As soon as Helium enters inside the cryostat, it passes through the activated charcoal trap, which captures the impurities present in the He gas. Post charcoal trap, Helium gas crosses first stage (40 K stage) and then second stage (4 K stage) of VTI. After second stage, there is Helium-pot in which the liquefied Helium is stored. Then, there is a needle valve, which controls the flow of Helium inside the VTI. Further, the system has a VTI heat exchanger, which consists of a Cernox sensor and a heater which adjusts the temperature of the Helium gas. After passing through the VTI, Helium gas goes back to the dump vessel via Helium outlet valve present on the cryostat and this process continues like a closed cycle refrigeration.

The system has two cryo-coolers which provide cooling to both the magnetic and the VTI. The cooling takes place by controlled expansion of the compressed Helium gas. Cryocoolers provide cooling at the first and second stages. The main function of the first stage is to cool the radiation shield around the low temperature parts of the system and also to pre-cool the circulating Helium. The second stage provides cooling to the magnet and the VTI.

How to Book the PPMS Sonipat slot:

Now, the PPMS Sonipat users can book the slots online directly. The slots will be opened regularly on a particular date and time (as notified on the CRF News Section). The details are given below:
1. We will open PPMS slots in three different categories:
i)  Magnetic measurements (M-T/M-H/ACS)
ii) Electrical transport measurement (DC Resistivity/AC Resistivity/Hall/LCC20)
iii) Thermal transport measurements (Thermal conductivity/Seebeck/Heat capacity)
2. We will open slots for 5 sessions (2 weeks) at a time as per tentative schedule given below:
1st week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
2nd week: Tuesday and Thursday
Whoever will book the slot online, those students will get to do their experiments in PPMS Sonipat in next two weeks and each student will get two successive slots (on working days) for his/her measurements. For example, if student books slot online on a Monday, he will get two successive slots of Monday and Tuesday, assuming both are working days (The student will be able to book Tuesday slot online later). The same will be applicable to everyone who will book the slot online
3. Each user must book 1 session (2 successive slots). One slot will be booked online on the date of opening of slots and the next working day slot will be booked online later (before the date of the measurements).
4. Each user will get 2 slots for Electrical and Magnetic Transport measurements. However, for performing Thermal Transport measurements, each user will get 3 slots (accordingly slots will be opened).
5. We will put an advance notice on CRF News Section, for which measurement category we are opening the current slots. If any user books a slot for different measurement category (for which we have not opened the current slots), we will decline that slot request.
6. Slot opening duration on rotational basis (might vary depending on the requirement of the users):
i) Magnetic measurements – 2 months
ii) Electrical measurements – 2 months
iii) Thermal measurements – 1 month
7. If there falls holiday(s) in a week, the slots will be managed accordingly.
8. A particular user is allowed to use PPMS facility once in every two weeks. For example, if a user gets a PPMS slot for 07th July, then that user will not be allowed to use PPMS again before 22nd  July .
9 One slot is for 8 hours, and charges are being paid per 8-hour slot.
10 Users MUST fill the details in online slot request form correctly and carefully. A slot request with incomplete information in the online request form will be declined.
