Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) (CRF Sonipat Campus)

Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) is a non-destructive scattering technique by which electron density differences in a sample containing nanoscaled structures can be quantified by recording the scattered X-rays at very low angles (typically 0.1 - 10°). The method can be used to determine nanoparticle (1-100 nm) size distributions, shape, pore sizes, particle density, inter particle distance of partially ordered materials, surface to volume ratio and much more. This is achieved by analysing the elastic scattering behaviour of X-rays when travelling through the material at a very small angle, hence the "Small-angle" in its name.

The materials can be solid or liquid and they can contain solid, liquid or gaseous domains of the same or another material in any combination. Not only particles, but also the structure of ordered systems likes protein, lamellae, and fractal-like materials can be studied. The method is accurate, non-destructive and usually requires only a few amount of sample.
