Multi-Functional Tribotester (CRF Owned Facility)

Tribotester is an instrument that measures friction, wear, coefficient of friction i.e. tribological properties between two surfaces in contact. Our multi-functional Tribotester has interchangeable modules and load cells, that allows it to run several tests on same platform. Further, it has in-built White Light Interferometer (WLI) that helps create 3D topograpghy of the surface, measure wear volume loss, surface roughness etc.

Instrument Make: Rtec Instruments,USA Model : Multi-Functional Tribotester
Multi-Functional Tribotester is equipped with following modes :
1. Friction and wear
2. Scratch Tester and Indentation
3. Tribo-corrosion
1. Friction and Wear

(a). Rotary mode :
Speed – 0.5 to 5000 RPM
Load – Upto 5000N
Conditions – Dry & Liquid
Sample size for liquid samples- Upto 50 mm

(b). Linear/Reciprocatory mode Wear
Linear, Continuous & Butterfly types of motion
Load- Upto 5000N
Travel- 150mm x 250mm with a resolution of 10 microns.
Stroke- 1mm to 30mm.
Frequency- Upto 40 Hz

For butterfly type motion, simultaneous force sensing about 3 Axis (30 mN to 2kN) and torque sensing about 3 Axis (0.1 Nm to 20 Nm) can be performed.

2. Scratch Tester and Indentation

(a). Scratch Hardness Tests
with load upto 200N.
Coating Adhesion Tests.
Scratch Resistance Tests.
Diamond tip radius- 20 µm and 100 µm.

(b) Indentation-
The hardness of a material is defined as a measurement of its resistance to permanent deformation when subjected to a constant compressive load.

(b-i) Micro Indentation:
Load range: 30mN to 60N Rockwell and Vicker Indentor

(b-ii) Macro Indentation
Load range: Upto 5000N
Rockwell and Vicker Indentor

3. Tribo-corrosion:

Tribocorrosion is a degradation process of materials during tribological testing which occurs due to the combined effect of corrosion and wear. Wear and friction tests can be performed in-situ during corrosion

Note: All the Tribology and Indentation Modules have in-situ imaging to estimate material loss, wear rates and roughness with the limited range of magnifications. This can be discussed with the operator.
Samples requirment for Multi-Functional Tribotester

(1).Rotary mode Sample requirement:

(2). Linear/Reciprocatory mode
Minimum Sample Size 20mm x 20mm (l,b)
Maximum Sample Size: 60mm x 50mm (l,b)
Height : (1 to 10mm) preferable

Note: The sample needs to be flat for Scratch and Indentation mode . Feasibility of samples shall be discussed with operator before booking of appointment
